More details have emerged on why the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, are investigating some of the financial dealings of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode during his tenure as Lagos state chief executive.

According to a report by New Telegraph, Ambode is being investigated for several deals ranging from unilateral award of over-inflated contracts, cooking the books of the state and approving many opaque deals that did not go through due process.

There are also allegations of the state’s commonwealth being diverted to private accounts in countries like Seychelles and Mauritius while the former governor was in charge.

Sources inside the EFCC quoted in the report, affirmed that alongside Ambode, a prominent bank chief, would soon be invited for interrogation about his involvement or otherwise in some of the allegations levelled against former Lagos governor.

Ambode and the bank chief are reportedly very good friends and did many businesses together. It is also being speculated that the former governor may be one of the largest shareholders of the bank at the moment.

There is also the case of a construction company established in 2016, one year into Ambode’s administration, and purportedly owned by the bank chief.

Without previous construction experience, the former governor allegedly awarded the company a $300million deal for road projects around select areas of the state particularly his Epe constituency.

Meanwhile, the EFCC recently narrated the ordeal of its men who stormed the home of Ambode, on Tuesday, August 20.

According to the EFCC, the operatives who were in Ambode’s home to execute a search warrant were resisted by hoodlums loyal to the former governor.

A statement by Wilson Uwujaren, said: “The thugs attacked the operatives and vandalized their vehicle.”
