Nigeria’s new health ministers: Facts you should know about Osagie Ehanire and Olorunnimbe Mamora

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, August 21, inaugurated 43 ministers into the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for his second term.

The new ministers were sworn in at the Council Chamber, State House, Abuja.

They took their oaths of office shortly after Boss Mustapha took his as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

The president after the oaths taking announced the portfolios of all the ministers.

The two ministers the president assigned to the Ministry of Health are Osagie Ehanire and Olorunnimbe Mamora.

Ehanire who is from Edo state is the senior minister while Mamora from Lagos state is the minister of state.

Osagie Ehanire

Background

1. Osagie Emmanuel Ehanire was born in November 1946

2. He hails from Oredo local government area of Edo state.

Education

3. Osagie attended Government College, Ibadan, for his West African School Certificate as well as Higher School Certificate (HSC). He passed the HSC with distinction

4. He studied Medicine at the University of Munich, Germany

5. Ehanire in 1976 attended the Royal College of Surgeon in Ireland, Dublin where he obtained a post-graduate diploma in Anaesthetics as well as a certificate in General Surgery and Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery

Profession

6. Ehanire is a medical doctor who has worked in Germany as resident Anesthesiologist, resident Vascular Surgeon and resident general surgeon in Thoracic Surgery at various hospitals.

7. He returned to Nigeria to continue his medical practice in 1982

8. In 1984, Dr Ehanire became a fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS).

9. Up till 1985, he worked at the Department of Surgery (Orthopaedic Surgery) University of Benin Teaching Hospital

10. In 1985, Ehanire joined Shell Development Company (SPDC) Hospital, Warri where he worked till 1990

11. He also served at various times as a member of the boards of Edo State Health Management Board and T.Y Danjuma Foundation among others.

Political career

12. Aside from medical practice, Ehanire is a seasoned politician: he was the leader of CPC in Edo state and a member of the Buhari Campaign Organisation after the emergence of APC.

13. He served as minister of state for health in the first term of President Buhari from 2015 to 2019

Mamora

Background

1. Mamora was born February 16, 1953

Education

2. He obtained a B.Sc Health Sciences, Bachelor of Medicine, and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Ife, Ile Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University).

Profession

3. Mamora worked as a general practitioner before venturing into politics

Political career

4. He was a National Delegate for the National Republican Convention( NRC) in 1990 and Secretary Lagos East of the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) in 1998

5. He was elected to the Lagos state House of Assembly in 1999 and was elected speaker

6. Mamora was chairman of the Conference of Speakers from 2000 to 2001

Recall that President Buhari informed his new ministers that Nigerians have great and quick expectations from his administration.

Speaking in Abuja at the presidential retreat for the ministers, the president noted that majority of Nigerians are poor and hoping for a better life.
