Poll: Nigerians want IPOB members who attacked Ekweremadu deported

Some members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) put up what has been tagged a "barbaric" show in Germany when they attacked Nigeria's former deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu.

Senator Ekweremadu was attacked at the 2nd Annual Igbo Cultural Festival held in Nuremberg, Germany where he was the special guest of honour.

The cultural event was organised by the Ndi-igbo community in charge.

The incident has been condemned by the federal government, the National Assembly and other key dignitaries and institutions/groups.

Legit.ng reports that the chairman of the Nigerians in diaspora commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in a tweet on Saturday, August 17, described the attack as barbaric and uncalled for.

Following the attack, which has spurred the House of Representatives to start making moves to protect Nigerian politicians while abroad, Legit.ng conducts a poll on social media, Facebook and Twitter, asking Nigerians what they think should be done by the federal government to the IPOB members who attacked Ekweremadu.

On Facebook, 40% of the respondents said the IPOB members should be arrested and jailed while 60% said the federal government should seek their deportation back to Nigeria.

The responses are, however, more divergent on Twitter: 13% of respondents want the IPOB members arrested and jailed, 14% want the federal government to seek their deportation, 6% want the government to blacklist them while the majority of the respondents, 67%, are indifferent; they don't care about whatever the government should do to them.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Progressive Students Movement, a pan-African students’ movement, on Sunday, August 18, condemned the attack on Senator Ekweremadu.

PSM called on the members of IPOB to tender an unreserved apology for the global embarrassment the incident caused Ekweremadu and the entire country.

The president of PSM in Nigeria, Bestman Okereafor, sent a strong note of warning to Igbos in Diaspora to shun acts capable of diminishing the hard built and industrious reputation of Igbos all over the world.
