The International 2019: groups, match schedule, prize pool

The International and much-awaited Dota 2 international event will be held in Shanghai (China) from 15th August to 25th August. There will be 18 tournaments taking part in the event.

There will be 12 teams according to the DPC rating with 6 slots going to winners of the regional qualifiers for the tournament. It was estimated that before the start of the tournament, the Dota 2 prize pool would have exceeded $ 33,000,000.

On August 7th, The International 2019 prize pool went above the $32,000,000 bar which kept increasing due to selling Battle Passes.

The International 2019 - everything you need to know

The tournament's tickets were available from 24 May 2019. They, however, got sold out in a few hours. The organizers of the Dota 2 The International had two categories of tickets with the first one being for China and the rest for other countries. Chinese Esports fans caused the tickets to be sold-out in a record 53 seconds.

DPC invites

During the entire season, teams were fighting for the Dota Pro Circuit rating points at tournaments across the globe. This was well worth it considering that the invited quota exceeded to 12 teams. The Epicenter Major 2019 managed the final point in the rating. There were 3 free vacant spots on the train before the tournament began. OG and TNC Predator, who were the reigning champions ,took the second last position being fought for by Alliance and Gambit. The fight was a tight one with everyone struggling to get the rights to go to T19. Finally, Alliance won the race with a score of 2:0.

Knockout stages were in 6 different divisions. North America, Europe, South America, CIS, Southeast Asia as well as China. All the regions played for an invitation to the International Dota 2 World Championship. The knockout stage in Southeast Asia, South America, and CID were held on 7th to 10th July. The same happened in Europe, North America, and China from the 11th to the 14th of July.

The winners at the qualifiers in North America are ex-Forward Gaming who are to perform as Newbee because their organization went bankrupt and got closed down. Others that proceeded are Infamous from South America and Chaos Esports Club from Europe. Adding on to the list of qualifiers, Natus Vincere turned out as the best in the CIS division. Other winners include Royal Never Give Up and Mineski, who were victorious in China and Southeast Asia.

The holding format

The championship Dota 2 International 2019 will start at the group stage. The eighteen teams will be divided into 2 groups of 9 participants each. They will then play Bo2 matches by Round Robin. Each group will have 4 of their best teams proceeding to the upper bracket of the playoff stage. The roster that takes 5-8 places in groups will begin their final stage from the lower bracket. The teams at the end of their groups will have to exit the championship.

Only 16 of 18 participants have a chance to get to the playoffs. Half of them will battle while on the upper bracket and the rest on the lower bracket. The first lower bracket matches will follow the Bo1 format while the rest will happen at Bo3 except for the grand finale.

The prize pool

The International 2019 prize pool is the largest in the Esports world. It currently stands at $32,000,000. The prize money is divided as follows:

  • 1st place — $14,604,813 (45.5%)
  • 2nd place — $4,172,804 (13%)
  • 3rd place — $2,888,865 (9%)
  • 4th place — $1,925,909 (6%)
  • 5th-6th place — $1,123,446 (3.5%)
  • 7th-8th place — $802,463 (2.5%)
  • 9th-12th place — $641,970 (2%)
  • 13th-16th place — $481,477 (1.5%)
  • 17th-18th place — $80,246 (0.25%)
