- An unconfirmed media report has said that El-Zakzaky and his wife are on their way back to Nigeria
- The couple traveled to India on Tuesday, August 12, for medical treatment
- El-Zakzaky was said to have expressed dissatisfaction over the treatment provided by the doctors in India
A report by some Nigerian media indicated that the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat, would be back in Nigeria on the evening of Thursday, August 15.
Legit.ng gathered that the Nation reported that a key leader of the sect, Yahaya Muhammad Soje, said the couple would leave the Madenta hospital India back for Nigeria.
According to the newspaper, Soje said El-Zakzaky and his wife have expressed dissatisfaction over the treatment provided by the doctors and alleged threats by security operatives.
According to him, "The security officials refused to allow the doctors he requested to treat him and his wife. As I am speaking with you now they are preparing to return to Nigeria this night.”
The federal government had earlier said that El-Zakzaky declined preliminary checks to be carried out on him.
Daily Trust reports that the government alleged that the IMN leader requested to be allowed to check into a 5-star hotel instead of being admitted in the hospital.
This was revealed in a statement by the permanent secretary, Ministry of Information and Culture, Grace Isu Gekpe. She confirmed that the Indian authorities have expressed willingness to return El-Zakzaky back to Nigeria with immediate effect for fear of his internationalising his group’s activities in the country.
Gekpe said El-Zakzaky’s cry that he is being held in circumstances worse than when he was in Nigeria should be disregarded because since arriving in India he has refused to subject himself to preliminary medical checks.
She added that El-Zakzaky also demanded that police protection be withdrawn from him by the Indian authorities.
She further noted that government was ready to undertake the prosecution of El-Zakzaky through due process if and when he is returned to the country adding that, “his foul cry that he is being held in circumstances worse than he was in Nigeria should be disregarded.”
Legit.ng had previously reported that the India government denied claims by the IMN that it was undermining the medical treatment El-Zakzaky.
