- The leader of the suspects, one Rev Ogbonna Nnachi, however, claimed they were only planning for a successful burial ceremony of one of his members when they were arrested
- The police has urged members of the public to provide credible information on any suspicious activity and movements of persons or goods in the state
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Wednesday, August 14 arrested not less than fifteen suspected Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) members in Amasiri, Afikpo North local government area, Ebonyi state.
The development was confirmed by the state’s police public relations officer, Odah Loveth, who added that the suspects were arrested at their convention ground in Amasiri, Daily Trust reports.
Legit.ng gathers that the leader of the suspects identified as Ogbonna Nnachi, a clergyman, however, claimed they were only planning for a successful burial ceremony of one of his members when they were arrested by the police.
DSP Odah said a credible intelligence report that IPOB/MASSOB/BIM members will hold their two-day 2019 convention in the area was what led to the arrest.
She said the command recovered Biafra insignia such as Biafra currency (two pounds), branded Biafra t-shirts, caps and bangles.
She said: “The Ebonyi state police command in active collaboration with other security agencies in the state, while acting on credible intelligence report that IPOB/MASSOB/BIM members will have their 2019 convention in the state, on 13 and 14 August, 2019, embarked on massive show of force covering the entire length and breadth of the state with particular focus on identified flash points.
“The exercise dominated the entire state and frustrated the activities of IPOB/MASSOB/BIM members, thereby denying them the opportunity to hold their meeting in the pre-arranged venue.
“They were however traced to a hideout in the bush around Amasiri, Afikpo North LGA of the state where fifteen (15) members led by one Rev Ogbonna Nnachi, M, about 70 years of age were arrested.
“Items recovered from them include Biafra Currency (two pounds), branded Biafra t-shirts, caps and bangles.”
Odah implored members of the public to provide credible information on any suspicious activity and movements of persons or goods in the state, as a means of assisting the police.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Enugu state police command confirmed the arrest of 140 IPOB members within Nsukka area of the state.
The police public relations officer of the command, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said the IPOB members, which included 130 males and 10 females, were arrested for allegedly organising unlawful procession and display of proscribed items on the streets.
