Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has disclosed he asked youngster Tammy Abraham not to worry after missing to score his crucial spot-kick that cost the Blues in their Super Cup defeat to Liverpool.

The two teams played out a 2-2 draw after extra time at Vodafone Arena in Istanbul on Wednesday night, August 14, to force the match into penalties.

The thrilling encounter saw the English clubs settle for a 1-1 draw after regulation time, with Sadio Mane and Olivier Giroud getting on the scoresheet for either side.

Mane handed Liverpool the lead minutes into extra time, but Jorginho equalised for Frank Lampard's men from the penalty spot after Adrian's foul in the dangerous area.

Roberto Firmino, Fabinho, Divock Origi, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah were all clinical from the spot as they converted their spot-kicks for Liverpool.

With Jorginho, Mason Mount, Ross Barkley, Emerson Palmieri all scoring, it was left for Tammy Abraham to convert his to force Liverpool to take a sixth spot-kick.

However, the 21-year-old's right-footed effort was saved by Adrian as Liverpool claimed the UEFA Super Cup.

The miss left Abraham distraught, with teammates appearing to comfort him shortly after the match.

"It is part and parcel of being at the top level. We have to be very supportive," Lampard said on Abraham's miss.

"I’ve told him not to worry. I’ve missed penalties before, anyone can miss, but what I want to see is the confidence of a young player to step up," he added.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is full of praise for his Blues armies despite losing the UEFA Super Cup title to fellow Premier League side Liverpool in Istanbul.
