As both teams prepared to entertain fans, there are some points we could pick to assist us on what to expect during the match. The last time the two sides met, Chelsea suffered a 2-0 loss against Liverpool at Anfield Stadium. This time around, a young spirited Chelsea team led by their former player and now head coach Frank Lampard were coming for nothing less than a win.
Chelsea was likely to use their dual anchor of Mateo Kovacic and Jorghino at their midfield since N'Golo Kante sustained a slight injury in their previous match. However, they were to play without some of their best talents such as Willian, Antonio Rudiger, Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reuben Loftus-Cheek.
Jurgen Klopp's side, on the other hand, was to be without their first-choice goalkeeper, Allison Becker. Becker picked an injury during their 4-1 win over Norwich. Nonetheless, Adrian stepped up to prove himself. Sadio Mane was expected to be available despite missing out in their club's line-up over the weekend. He stepped up and became the man of the match.
Despite the hard fight each side put in, the match ended in a 2-2 draw prompting the two teams to settle it out through penalties. Jorginho and Olivia Giroud scored for the blue where Sadio Mane bagged two goals for Liverpool. The shoot outs ended 5-4 in favour of the UEFA Champions League winners after Tammy Abraham's penalty was saved by Adrian.
