He wrote: "So while we slept (figuratively), this was happening quietly. Nigerian politicians with corruption conviction records and scandalous pasts are hiring people to scrub such convictions and records from their online bios and Wikipedia bio entries.

"My colleague and friend, Roy Doron, who researches Nigeria, went to the Wikipedia page of former Delta state governor, James Onanefe Ibori, and discovered that every information on his corruption conviction and scandals had been removed--edited out."

Ochonu continued that anyone can edit a Wikipedia profile but a reason has to be given for the change. In Ibori’s case, the reason given was that the information was hurting the subject on a political and international business level.

The person responsible for the editing further explained that he was personally informed by the former governor to ‘remove negative publicity’.

The edition history reportedly read: "Deletion of negative publicity that is hurting the person on a political and international business level. I was personally informed by Mr James Ibori to remove negative publicity. Removed all false and negative publicity of Mr James Ibori, as per instructed by himself."
