Scores of Boko Haram terrorists neutralised in Sambisa Forest

- Air Task Force has successfully destroyed a Boko Haram terrorists’ command and control centre on the fringes of Sambisa Forest in Borno state

- Several Boko Haram insurgents were neutralised during the operation as air strikes targeted their command structures

- The operation was carried out through Operation Green Sweep III, which aimed at targeting some identified terrorist positions in the state

Scores of Boko Haram terrorists have been neutralised by the Nigerian Air Force at the fringes of Sambisa Forest.

According to Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, NAF spokesman, the insurgents were neutralised at the weekend as air strikes targeted at their command structures, The Nation reports.

The strikes were conducted by the Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole, after intelligence report indicated the presence of the terrorists in the area.

Daramola, in a statement, said: “In a renewed offensive aimed at further eliminating remnants of Boko Haram and Islamic State of West Africa Province Terrorists (BHT/ISWAP) in the northeast of Nigeria, the Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole has launched Operation Green Sweep 3, which targets some identified terrorists’ positions in Borno state.

“In furtherance of the operation, the ATF on August 9 successfully destroyed a BHT Command and Control Centre at Dusula on the fringes of the Sambisa Forest.

“The operation was executed after series of Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions led to the identification of the Command Centre with its solar panels, communications equipment and other facilities."

According to him, three Alpha Jets dispatched by the ATF engaged the location in multiple passes, and recorded accurate hits on the target area.

He stated that the structures housing the Command Centre were completely destroyed by the strikes and several of the terrorists were also neutralised.

The few surviving terrorists, who were seen attempting to flee the area, were taken. The NAF, operating in concert with surface forces, will sustain its operations against the terrorists in the Northeast," the statement added.

In an earlier report by Legit.ng, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, said the Armed Forces has substantially degraded Boko Haram insurgents operating in the northeast.

According to him, they have recorded much success in the fight against insurgency since the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration took over power in 2015.
