US did not deny visa Peter Obi - Aide gives true situation

Peter Obi, running mate to Atiku Abubakar, the presidential; candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 general elections, was not denied visa by the United States of America, his aide, Valentine Obienyem, has said.

Obienyem said the report that his principal and former governor of Anambra state was denied visa recently is false.

The Nigerian Tribune reports that the rumour may have been the result of the recent visa ban slammed on some Nigerian politicians in the aftermath of the general elections.

The report said Obienyem pointed fingers in the direction of the governor of Anambra state, Willie Obiano, as being behind the rumour.

“Rather than face serious issues for the good of the society, his boys are busy cooking up and circulating that Obi was denied visa by the USA embassy,” he alleged.

He added: “As I write, Obi is in the USA now at the invitation of highly placed officials. Ironically these are the officials that were supposed to have denied him visa application. What a confused bunch!”

Obi’s aide, while noting his principal’s achievements as governor of Anambra, added: “since he left Anambra government house, his records which nobody is even trying to surpass, still speak for him.”

Legit.ng earlier reported that the US government, through its embassy and consulate in Nigeria, recently said that its visa ban will affect only politicians in the country who have cases of electoral crimes during the last general elections.

According to a statement signed by the embassy's spokesman, Morgan Ortagus, the ban is not for newly elected government officials, but specifically for those who through their activities tried to undermine Nigeria's democracy during the polls.
