All youth groups in Rivers state have been proscribed by the state government, which stated that cultists had hijacked the groups.
The development was announced by the state governor, Nyesom Wike, at the Government House, as he handed over 40 patrol vans fitted with communication gadgets to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), See 4 Eye, Police Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Police Anti-Cultism Unit, Federal Road Safety Corps and Eagle Crime on Thursday, August 8, Daily Trust reports.
Legit.ng gathers that he said: “Rivers state government is fully prepared and will do everything required to protect lives and property. Without the protection of lives and property, there will be no governance and development.
“Anybody operating under a youth body henceforth will be arrested by security agencies. Before you contest for any youth body’s leadership, you must send the names to the DSS and police for screening. If they are cultists, we will not allow them to operate.”
Wike said there was need to proscribe youth groups, as cultists had taken over the groups. He said the vehicles and gunboats donated to the security agencies must be deployed to secure Rivers state.
The Rivers police commissioner, Mustapha Dandaura, in his remarks, said the new security vans will be used by the security agencies to tackle criminals across the state.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Governor Nyesom Wike declared that nobody should attempt the RevolutionNow protest in Rivers state.
In a statement sent to journalists by his media aide, Simeon Nwakaudu, Governor Wike said that Rivers state was not part of the RevolutionNow protest, describing it as “illegal agenda.”
He directed security agencies in the state to arrest anybody involved in the RevolutionNow protest and also take all necessary steps to prosecute such persons.
