Maurice Iwu: Court remands former INEC boss in EFCC's custody

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered that Professor Maurice Iwu be remanded in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Iwu is to remain in EFCC's custody till Friday, August 9, till when his application for bail will be heard, although he has pleaded not guilty to all the charges made against him, Channels TV reports.

Recall that Iwu had arrived a Federal High Court in Lagos to be arraigned by the anti-graft agency over N1.2billion fraud.

Iwu was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday, August 8.

EFCC’s acting spokesperson, Tony Orilade, first revealed the earlier plan to arraign the former INEC boss in a statement in Abuja on Thursday.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that a deputy director with the INEC, Auwal Jibrin, was convicted and sentenced to six years imprisonment over an alleged bribe by former petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke. The jail term was secured by the EFCC Kano zonal office on Friday, June 28.

The EFCC also secured the conviction of one Garba Ismaila before Justice Yusuf Birnin-Kudu of the Jigawa state high court sitting in Gumel, on a six-count charge bordering on unlawful enrichment and gratification.

A statement by the EFCC noted that the journey to prison for them started after the commission received intelligence report that they benefited from the $115,010,000 largesse of Alison-Madueke, in the build-up to the 2015 presidential election.
