The explosion destroyed the institute’s building, but fortunately none among the patients and medical staff was harmed.

The damage saw Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly call for the facility's immediate restoration as members of the public moved to donate money to help the affected community.

And Salah is among the donors, with the President of Cairo University, Mohamed Othman ElKhosht, confirming receipt of US$3 million from the footballer who he lauded for his philanthropy and patriotism.

In a tweet lamenting the tragedy, Salah said: “My full support and condolences to the families of victims and victims of the explosion of the Cancer Institute.”

Meanwhile, this is not the first time the Liverpool forward is donating sums of money towards a common cause.

In 2018, he donated equipment worth $14 million to a children’s cancer hospital.
