Just In: Court stops NASS from taking over Edo assembly

- A Federal High Court in Abuja ordered a stay of action over the controversy affecting the Edo House of Assembly

- The National Assembly is reportedly attempting to take over the state assembly

- Governor Obaseki had said the state assembly is not answerable to the National Assembly

A Federal High Court in Abuja has asked parties to a suit challenging the alleged plans by the National Assembly to interfere in the affairs of the Edo state House of Assembly not to take any further actions.

The Nation reports that Justice Taiwo Taiwo who is sitting as the court’s vacation judge asked all parties to maintain status-quo and adjourned the hearing until August 22.

The judge said the order was intended to prevent the parties “from foisting on the court a fait accompli.”

The order came following apprehension expressed by Ola Olanipekun who is the lawyer to the plaintiff who claimed there was threat by the National Assembly to tamper with the subject of dispute.

The judge “ordered the respondents to file their responses to the main suit within seven days and for the plaintiff to file his reply within five days.”

The speaker of the Edo state House of Assembly, Francis Okiye, filed the suit to stop the National Assembly from taking over the functions of the state Assembly.

Listed as respondents are: the clerk of the National Assembly and the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Edo governor Godwin Obaseki was stopped from issuing a fresh proclamation for the inauguration of the 7th session of the state's House of Assembly.

A Federal high court sitting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital, issued the restraining order which effectively stops the governor from taking any further action on the crisis affecting the Edo assembly.

The court order was granted at the request of the deputy speaker of the Edo state House of Assembly, Hon. Yekini Idiaye, and the member representing Ikpoba-Okha constituency in the assembly, Hon. Henry Okhua-Robo.
