- Alhaji Mallami Yandoto, chairman of Zamfara local council commission, says Governor Bello Matawalle is prepared to pay N30,000 to workers
- Yandoto laments that top officials of local governments in the state do not earn well
- The commission's chairman pleads with the workers to show more commitment to their jobs
The governor of Zamfara, Bello Matawalle, has agreed to pay the new minimum wage of N30,000 to local government workers in the state.
This was disclosed by the chairman of the state’s local government service commission, Alhaji Mallami Yandoto on Tuesday, August 6.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Yandoto, who spoke in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara, said the governor was not satisfied with the poor working conditions to which the local government employees were subjected, especially as they are on a salary below the former N18, 000 minimum wage.
“I cannot imagine an officer on grade level 16 not earning up to N30,000 as monthly salary; how can efficiency be achieved with such poor wages?" Yandoto said adding that the full implementation of new minimum wage to local government employees would enable them be alive to their responsibilities.
Yandoto urged the workers to be more committed to their jobs.
“Henceforth, local government service commission will shoulder the responsibility of payment of local government staff salary, proper monitoring and improvement of staff commitment to duty,” he said.
The chairman said the commission would no longer fold its arms to allow political office holders victimise civil servants for reasons contrary to the law.
Legit.ng earlier reported how Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), decried the delay of the implementation of the new minimum wage.
Oshiomhole, who was a president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), described the situation as unfair treatment to both workers and labour unions.
