NUC says it has not approved degree of online universities in Nigeria

- The NUC is collaborating with NYSC to ensure the credibility of certificates issued by Nigerian universities

- The university commission clarified that online degrees were not approved in the country

- The NYSC on its part said it would not issue certificate to unqualified graduates

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has vowed to block the increasing number of fake foreign trained graduates coming to Nigeria for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed who is the executive secretary of the NUC stated this when he hosted the director-general of NYSC, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, in his office.

He said the two bodies will collaborate to ensure the credibility of certificates issued by Nigerian universities.

Abubakar lamented the high number of graduates who cannot defend their certificates particularly the low standard of affiliate institutions. He said the NUC has not approved degree of online universities in the country, saying there was need for proper monitoring of institutions.

He said: "NUC and NYSC must work together to help the country in producing quality graduates and NUC will continue to certify the credibility of certificates obtained from Nigerian universities."

Abubakar lamented the challenges “in vetting the certificates being obtained from universities established by Nigerians outside the country.”

He added that NUC had approached EFCC and ICPC to shut down some illegal universities in the country.

Ibrahim on his part said the NYSC would not issue its certificate of national service to unqualified graduates “but appealed for stakeholders' support in its determination towards seamless and credible mobilisation process.”

Meanwhile, Ibrahim promised to inform corps members about the date for the commencement of the payment of N30,000 new allowance to them.

Ibrahim said this at a workshop on freedom of information act for desk officers of the NYSC in Abuja.

“They will be communicated accordingly, please,” he said when he was asked the particular date for the commencement of the payment to the corps members.
