Liverpool vs Manchester City ended in a 5-4 shoot-out win after both sides settled for a 1-1 scoreline during regulation time.

Georginio Wijnaldum missed his spot-kick as Gabriel Jesus scored the deciding penalty to win it for City as they retain the Community shield trophy.

A genuine chance fell to Leroy Sane in the fourth minute but the angle was too difficult for him, as his shot hit the side-netting.

Roberto Firmino responded in the sixth minute, as he wrapped his foot around a bouncing ball in City's 18-yard area, which went straight into the hands of Alisson.

Firmino was involved in Liverpool's next chance as he provided a brilliant assist to Mohamed Salah, whose shot went wide, but the Egyptian was flagged offside.

But it was Raheem Sterling who took the lead for the Citizens as a clever flick from David Silva and the Englishman's shot made Alisson uneasy in goal. It was 1-0 to the Premier League champions.

Alisson was put to the test again within the space of two minutes as the Brazilian shot-stopper saved Kevin De Bruyne's low cross, as well as putting his body on the line for Sterling's shot at the near post.

Pep Guardiola's side went into the break the happier and better side despite losing Leroy Sane to injury, as Jurgen Klopp's men found it difficult to get into the game in the first 45 minutes.

City should have buried the game two minutes after hour mark as Sterling found himself one-on-one with Alisson, but his indecision made him lose the ball to the goalkeeper.

Liverpool deservedly got the equalizer in the 78th minute from a set-piece after a not properly-headed clearance found Vigil van Dijk in the box.

The Dutchman sent the ball then lofted back into the box as Joel Matip rose highest to head home and draw the game level at 1-1.

Naby Keita forced a fine save from Claudio Bravo from Adam Lallana's cut back in the 83rd minute and the Chilean produced another crucial stop from Salah five minutes later.

Salah nearly won it for Liverpool in the 92nd minute as his second attempt on goal was acrobatically cleared off the goal-line by Kyle Walker.

Both sides settled for a draw after 90 minutes as the match was decided on penalties and the Citizens carried the day with a 5-4 win after shoot-outs.
