UK-based Nigerian student drowns while swimming in River Thames due to heatwave (photo)

Legit.ng recently gathered that a young Nigerian art student named Jonathan Adebanjo recently drowned in River Thames. The young man aged 23 was an Illustration student at Camberwell College of Arts, London.

It was reported that he disappeared while swimming with his friends at Shadwell Basin on Tuesday, July 23. His body was recovered 16 hours later on an early Wednesday morning.

According to reports, he was one of three people who drowned due to the heatwave that hit the Thames. As temperatures soar during the heatwave, the fire brigade put out an urgent warning against open water swimming.

The other two people who died were a 47-year-old swimmer who drowned in Kingston and another person who vanished in the water at Waterloo Bridge.

Evening Standard reported that Jonathan lived in Catford and was a keen skateboarder. His grieving dad revealed that he was about to begin his final year in the university: “He was due to enter his final year at Camberwell College of Arts, part of the University of the Arts London."

Jonathan's father also revealed that although his son was a good swimmer, it was very unusual for him to go and swim in River Thames.

David Crow, the head of Camberwell College of Arts, paid tribute with these words: “Everyone who met him was charmed by his sweetness and individuality of spirit — he was a winning combination of dreamy, funny and thoughtful. It is a tragedy we will not see his talents develop further.”
