- The presidency has condemned the call for a sovereign national conference in Nigeria
- Garba Shehu said that whoever is calling for another national conference is not being democratic
- According to Shehu, President Buhari is open to ideas and suggestions that could take the country forward
Nigeria's presidency has reacted to the suggestion that a sovereign national conference will solve the challenges of insecurity across the country.
The senior special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, Garba Shehu while speaking in Lagos on Sunday, July 21, berated those calling for a national conference.
Shehu describing these individuals as undemocratic said the president is open to suggestions on how to move the nation forward.
He also said it is wrong for anybody or group of people to say that the present administration is not doing anything as regards to insecurity or other major challenges being faced by Nigeria.
“For somebody to sit in his sitting room to say we are doing nothing is rubbish. President Buhari is open to ideas, suggestions are welcome.
“We have a National Assembly. For someone to sit in the comfort of his home to call for a national conference, shows the person is not a democrat," Shehu said.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that former president Goodluck Jonathan had explained why he never implemented the recommendations of the 2014 national conference.
Jonathan said he did not want it to be seen as a political and popularity gain for him since the recommendation were made close to the end of his administration.
He also called on the present administration to implement the recommendations of the 2014 national conference.
