Herdsmen crisis: Don't push Yorubas into war - Popular pastor warns

- Sunday Adelaja, a popular Nigerian pastor, has asked Yorubas to disregard comments calling for war

- The clergyman asked people to learn from history and approach issues with their mind and not sentiments

- Adelaja said war does nobody good as it leads to crisis rather than resolution

A popular Nigerian pastor, Sunday Adelaja, has reacted to the comments by Yoruba people calling for war over the supposed atrocities of herdsmen in the south west.

The comments calling for war reached its peak after the murder of Pa Reuben Fasoranti’s daughter, who some have said is the handiwork of herdsmen.

In a short video online, the popular pastor asked Yorubas to use their intelligence and think through the call for war some of their leaders have been making, saying tragedy in the nation is not peculiar to them alone.

He said: “Yorubas have always been known to be very intelligent and thinking people…, but the response I have been getting since the introduction of Ruga has broken my heart. I am not trying to justify the herdsmen or Ruga, but I think the evils in the county is a tragedy…

"I want my Yoruba people to know that it is a national tragedy and not just a Yoruba tragedy…. If we recongnise it as such, we will be able to face it professionally.”

The clergyman called out people like Yinka Odumakin and Fani Kayode for pushing the people towards war with their comments, questioning their knowledge of history.

Adelaja cited the Biafra war of Ojukwu to show how it could be a very horrible experience as it does no one any good.

He, therefore, asked Yoruba people to use their mind instead of employing sentiments, and not to repeat the mistake of the past.

“But from what I have been getting from the media, we are using sentiments more than we are using our minds, and that is my concern, especially when you listen to the leaders of the Yoruba people, they are beating the war drums…

"Remember what Ojukwu said something like that some time ago which eventually led to the death of over two million people…

"Mr Odumakin, I am sure you know history. You should know better, please don’t lead Nigeria into a war.

“People like Fani Kayode, you boost yourself to have been educated in England, you know the cost of war, you should know better. Please don’t push Yoruba people into war."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that the Yoruba council of elders on Monday, July 1, rejected the proposed establishment of Ruga settlements in any of the states in the south west zone.

It was also gathered that Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adams, rejected the policy, saying it is a policy that can break the nation just as it has overheated the polity.
