Herdsmen leaders beg Imo community over violence by cattle rearers

- The Obokofia community in Ohaji/Egbema local government area of Imo state has been urged to forgive herdsmen who attacked indigenes

- The call for forgiveness was made by Imo state Hausa community chairman, Suleman Ibrahim Suleman, and the leader of the herdsmen, Yahaya Haruna

- The leaders of the herdsmen said that they are aware and concerned about the plights of farmers and natives in the community

Leaders of herdsmen have begged for the forgiveness of Obokofia community in Ohaji/Egbema local government area of Imo state over the violence against indigenes by cattle rearers.

According to Vanguard, this was part of the resolve of the meeting held on Wednesday, July 10, between the Ohaji/Egbema community chairman, Damian Ezeru, and leaders of northern group and herdsmen, Vanguard reports.

Attendees of the meeting included officials of the Department of State Service, Imo state Hausa community chairman, Suleman Ibrahim Suleman, leader of the herdsmen, Yahaya Haruna, the town union president of Obokofia community, Ben Mark Adizua, traditional rulers and some clergies.

Speaking to natives after the meeting, Ezeru said: “I promised to communicate to the state government on what we have resolved, after hearing from both sides.

“We have assured our people of maximum security promised to handle the whole issue as a matter of urgency and to achieve peace in the area. I urge the people to remain calm for there will not be further violent between them and Herdsmen.

“I have listened carefully to the complaints and plights of our people and I promised to report to the appropriate body for final decision. I pleaded with them to remain calm and not to take laws into their hands."

On his part, Suleiman said: “We want you people to forgive us and we understand the plights of the farmers as a result of what is happening, you know in a family there must be a stubborn child who doesn’t listen to the words of the father or mother and some of them will not obey instructions. Please forgive."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that some suspected gun wielding men were said to be shooting sporadically in Obokofia, in Ohaji/Egbema local government area of Imo state.

The gunmen on Wednesday, July 3, forced residents to scamper for saftey. It was gathered that the gunmen started shooting sporadically in the air to scare residents of the community.
