Suspected armed robbers in the morning of Friday, July 12, stormed the Obafemi Awolowo residential hall of University of Ibadan, Oyo state, and injured no fewer than two students of the hostel.
Legit.ng's regional reporter in Ibadan, Ridwan Kolawole, reports that the gunmen who came to the hostel shot sporadically to announced their arrival, raided the hall and took away valuable mobile phones and money from the helpless female students.
It was gathered that as a way to curtail the reported cases of theft and robbery, the university management had on July 1, ordered the ban on Okada operators who were believed to be the perpetrators of the robbery crime in the past.
The university had since July 1, replaced motorcycle with tricycle. But, barely 11 days after the university placed ban on commercial motorcycles on campus, the first major incident of robbery was recorded.
The director of communication, University of Ibadan, Olatunji Oladejo, who confirmed the incident, however, stated that the injured students have been taken to the university's health clinic popularly called Jaja for treatment.
Oladejo said: "Yes, it happened. The Chief Security Officer (CSO), Victor Fadeyibi, told me that only two students were injured. And they have been taken to Jaja clinic.
"The CSO told me that it happened this morning. The police from Ojoo, Bodija, Sango were called. They came, even the Operation Burst came. They came and searched for the robbers. I can tell you that investigation is still on.
"It is a female hostel. Many of the students were said to have been robbed. But, there is no reported case of molestation."
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the parents of Muslims students in ISI, University of Ibadan, accused the principal of the school, Phebean Olowe, of harassing their children for wearing hijab to school.
