About 500 thugs popularly known as Sara-Suka have reportedly denounced criminal activities and surrendered their weapons to the police in Bauchi.
Daily Trust reports that the repentant thugs surrendered their weapons at a gathering held at the Bauchi state police command on Monday, July 8.
Legit.ng gathers that various weapons which include knives, cutlasses, clubs and other crude weapons surrendered by the thugs were displayed during the gathering.
The police commissioner, Habu Sani Ahmadu, attributed the denouncement by the Sara-Suka thugs to the new strategy adopted by the command to curb criminal activities through collaborative community policing.
He added that the thugs decided to surrender and become good and law abiding citizens due to the pressure and awareness campaigns against crime in the state.
“Among the repentant youths, 294 of them are skilled in various trades and hand jobs, 31 are students while 170 are unskilled,” he said.
Bauchi state governor Bala Mohammed who was represented by the chief of staff, Alhaji Abubakar Kari, at the event commended the youths for repenting and abandoning their criminal life.
He promised that the state government is planning various programmes aimed at improving the lives of youths and women in the state.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Bauchi state governor on Wednesday, June 12, disclosed that a state of emergency would soon be declared in educational sector in the state.
Mohammed said the state cut off marks are the lowest and transition from primary to secondary is the lowest in the country because of the poor quality of teaching.
The governor spoke in Bauchi when members of Global Affairs Canada visited him at the council chambers, Government House.
