Algeria have sealed a place in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals after stunning Ivory Coast 4-3 on penalties in a thrilling quarter final clash played at Suez Stadium on Thursday, July 11.

Both Serey Die and Wilfried Bony missed their spot-kicks for Ivory Coast, with Youcef Belaili having his hit the post for Algeria.

The two sides settled for a 1-1 draw after regulation time, Sofiane Feghouli scoring Algeria's opener in the 20th minute, before Jonathan Kodjia equalising Ivory Coast in the second half.

The Desert Foxes, who had not conceded a single goal in the run-up to this clash would have themselves to blame for failing to bury the match in the 49th minute after Baghdad Bounedjah firing his shot off the crossbar from the penalty spot.

Ivory Coast had the earliest chance to take the lead in the 5th minute of the match, but Max Gradel's brilliantly curled effort from just outside the box tipped onto the post by Rais M'Bolhi.

Algeria went on to utilise their glorious opportunity 15 minutes later, with Sofiane Feghouli breaking the deadlock with a fine finish after benefiting from Ramy Bensebaini's cross.

The two sides headed into the break with Algeria nearly doubling the lead minutes before half-time through Riyad Mahrez who saw his powerful shot blocked.

The second-half yet again presented plentiful of goalscoring chances, with Jonathan Kodjia's cross-shot from a tight angle taking a deflection off Aissa Mandi before rattling the crossbar minutes after Algeria's missed penalty.

But the Elephants kept pushing for the equaliser that finally came in the 62nd minute through Jonathan Kodjia who blasted a shot past keeper Rais M'Bolhi, with Zaha claiming the assist.

The dying minutes of regulation time witnessed a flicker of drama, with Algeria's appeal for a penalty after Adam Ounas went down in the box brushed off by the referee as the match finished 1-1.

And with neither side getting the winner after extra time, the clash had to be decided in the shootouts as Algeria emerged victors to book a date with Nigeria in the semis.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Nigeria defeated South Africa 2-1 in an AFCON 2019 quarter final clash at the Cairo International Stadium.

Samuel Chukwueze opened the scoring in the 27th minute before Bongani Zungu equalized in the 71st but William Troost-Ekong scored the winner in the 89th minute as the Super Eagles progressed into the semi finals.
