- Lionel Messi deserves to win sixth Ballon d'Or this year, according to Rivaldo
- The 1999 winner believes no other player scored a lot of goals than the Argentine
- Messi won La Liga, but failed to win Champions League, Copa del Rey and Copa America
Lionel Messi has been tipped by Brazil legend Rivaldo to win Ballon d'Or despite winning just the La Liga title this season.
The Barcelona forward had a glittering season in Spain, scoring 51 goals in all competition to lead his team to another league success.
But the 32-year-old failed to make it into the finals of the Champions League and also lost out to Valencia in the Copa del Rey final.
Messi could not also help Argentina at the just concluded Copa America tournament as they finished in a disappointing third position.
However, Rivaldo who won the award in 1999 still believes Messi should be rewarded with a record sixth Ballon d'Or.
"In my opinion, the Ballon D'Or of this season is Messi for what he has done," he told Betfair.
"He didn't win the Champions League, but because it is an individual prize he scored a lot of goals, important goals."

Messi and Ronaldo have won five Ballons d'Or each, claiming the prize between them for a decade before Luka Modric ended their run in 2018.
Rivaldo hailed the duo for their performances, saying: "They are such great players. I like them both.
"Messi always makes the difference at Barcelona and Ronaldo at every club and the national team – Juventus and Portugal.
"It's going to be thrilling again. When you talk about them it's for something good, they both score so many goals."
