- Architect Ezekiel Nyah Etok has been berated over his comments on the newly launched Ibom Air
- The candidate of Young Democratic Party (YDP) in the 2019 governorship election in Akwa Ibom state has been a strong critic of the airline
- The Akwa Ibom Liberation Movement has openly disagreed with his views on the airline
The Akwa Ibom Liberation Movement (AILM) has disagreed with the views of the candidate of Young Democratic Party (YDP) in the 2019 governorship election in Akwa Ibom state, Architect Ezekiel Nyah Etok, over his comments on the newly launched state airline, Ibom Air.
AILM, in a media briefing held in its secretariat in Uyo, on Wednesday, July 10 by its acting secretary general, Solomon Abasiekong, opposed what it described as Etok’s doubts on the profitability and sustainability of the airline.
It said although the YDP guber candidate thought the state’s airline is a wasteful venture, “several Nigerians, including notable opposition sympathizers such as APC chieftain, Mr. Anietie Usen and human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong Esq., gave great review for the unprecedented feat.”
AILM maintained that Etok was only “grand-standing with his assertions about an innovation that has enjoyed wide acceptance from all well meaning Akwa Ibom citizens and Nigerians as a whole.”
“Much as his series of essay on Ibom Air do not deserve a second thought let alone a rebuttal, we decide to make an exception of this particular piece, reason being that Etok seems emboldened each day,” the group said.
Taking a swipe at Etok’s proposal of what Ibom Air should look, the group expressed concern that his idea for the airline is no different from the herders’ demand for ‘ruga settlement.’
Etok has been very vocal in criticizing the conceptualization of the airline, referring to it as wasteful venture.
In a recent article titled "Again on Ibom Air,'' he questioned the profitability and sustainability of the airline.
Abasiekong said: “We believe that Architect Nyah Etok's baseless insinuations about Ibom Air are aimed to sustain his dying popularity after the 2019 governorship elections.
“He searches for nonexistent loopholes in governance and weaves them into narratives to feed his waning audience.
“We also understand that having spent three decades pushing a scam in order to earn a slice of national cake, Arch. Ezekiel Nyah Etok has set his sight on becoming a governor in Akwa Ibom state through whatever means, no matter how far-fetched. Sadly, his method is unreal.”
Ibom Air, the Akwa Ibom state owned airline commenced full commercial flights on Friday, June 7.
The airline managed and operated by Ibom Air Company Limited is one of the signature projects of Governor Udom Emmanuel’s first term, launched amidst pomp and pageantry on Wednesday, February 20 with three aircraft on its fleet.
