A group within the All Progressives Congress, APC, Advocates for Integrity in Politics (AIP) has called on the party to be weary of some governorship aspirants in Kogi state.

AIP specifically warned the party against associating with Vice Admiral Admiral Jubril Usman (rtd), alleging that he is out to discredit the party.

The group said the former naval chief should not be giving the ticket of the party, accusing him of using the APC as a front to hide from the criminal charges levied against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a press statement signed by its convener, Hon. Adeboye Olayinka, the group said it was a surprise, that the former Chief of Naval Staff, who was a well known member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to have suddenly jumped ship this year to the APC.

His words: “The former Chief of Naval Staff actually worked for PDP in the 2015 election. Though that was understandable being a service chief under a PDP government.

“But it is quite surprising to not only see him in 2019 trying to contest for governorship election under the APC in Kogi state, when in actual fact he was not only a member but a chief financial of PDP in the last general election.

“We see his sudden steps in our party as an avenue to hide from prosecution. APC is not a party for those with criminal charges to hide, because one day, their deed will seek them out.

“Our party's fortune in the elections will be affected if someone who has a criminal case hanging on his head is allowed to fly the flag. We don't want to be seen as a party that harbour incompetence, reckless and treasure looters.”

The group stated that if the former naval chief picks the APC ticket, “it would bring insensitivity and contempt to the values and feelings of progressive nature our party is known for.”

“APC is a responsible party, should not be seen in such shameless dance, that give lee ways to failed, depraved and unrestrained looters of our national treasury in the past years.

“APC, should not been seen as a sanctuary of looters and unpatriotic people. We must rise to counter the lies, deceit and failures of pretenders in our party,” the group stated.

Meanwhile, a chieftain of the APC, Prince B.B. Apugo, has stated that the south-east must join the ruling party so as to bargain for recognition at the centre from the position of strength.

Apugo, a member of APC board of trustees and national caucus, said in an interview with Daily Trust in Abuja that it was wrong for people of the south-east region to ask for power and recognition from outside.

According to him, the best way to go was to join the ruling party, support the government of President Muhammadu Buhari and then negotiate for key positions as a matter of right.
