Nigeria’s Super Eagles clash with South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in the quarterfinal round of the ongoing 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Wednesday, July 10, at the Cairo International Stadium.
The encounter is the first time in 15 years both countries will meet at this stage of Africa's football showpiece.
South Africa progressed to the quarterfinal round after surprising tournament host Egypt with a 1-0 win on Saturday evening. Thembinkosi Lorch's 85th minute strike was Bafana Bafana needed to march on.
On the other hand, Nigeria sent defending champions – Cameroon packing from the biennial tournament with a 3-2 win, courtesy of a brace from Odion Ighalo and a goal from Alex Iwobi.
At the last count, Nigeria have claimed more wins in matches involving the two nations, but South Africa remain unbeaten in their last five fixtures against the Super Eagles.
During the qualifiers South Africa handed a 2-0 win during the qualifiers - before holding the Super Eagles to another a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture last year.
Interestingly, with the match fixed for 8pm Nigerian time, throwback pictures of Super Eagles stars-John Obi Mikel and Oghenekaro Etebo have gone viral on the social media.
If fielded, the two players are expected to play important role to ensure Nigeria continue her winning run over the South Africans at AFCON.
At the 2004 tournament hosted in Tunisia, Osaze Odemwingie netted twice in two minutes to complete a 4-0 bashing for South Africa.
The winner between both nations will battle Ivory Coast’s Elephants or Algeria’s Desert Foxes for a spot for July 19 AFCON final game.
