Darroch, in a letter to Simon McDonald, the permanent under-secretary at the Foreign and Commonwealth office, said he needed to do away with rumours concerning his position.
The ambassador said: "The current situation is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like.
"Although my posting is not due to end until the end of this year, I believe in the current circumstances the responsible course is to allow the appointment of a new ambassador."
Concerning the resignation, May said that Darroch's decision was a matter of great regret, adding that he felt it was necessary.
She said: "Good government depends on public servants being able to give full and frank advice," May told the House of Commons.
"I want all our public servants to have the confidence to be able to do that. And I hope the house will reflect on the importance of defending our values and principles — particularly when they are under pressure."
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Trump on Tuesday, July 9, slammed Darroch, describing him as a very stupid man.
Also, President Trump referred to May, as being foolish in relation to her handling of the failed Brexit deal.
In a tweet on his official Twitter page, Trump, describing the ambassador as someone forced upon US, advised him to speak to his country and May and not be angered by his criticism.
