Nigeria vs South Africa: 4 facts about Gernot Rohr as he eyes AFCON glory

Nigeria vs South Africa will pose another stern test for Gernot Rohr when he faces his opposite number Stuart Baxter for third time in as many years.

Nigerian football has been on the rise since the appointment of German tactician back in 2016.

The 66-year-old is gradually shaping the Super Eagles squad into a world class team following impressive results the team has produced since his arrival.

The three-time African champions are one of the favourites to win AFCON 2019 after producing convincing results in the competition so far.

Now the Super Eagles need to produce another spectacular result when they play Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the quarter finals of the tournament.

Rohr traveled to Egypt with a completely dynamic squad as 20 of the 23 players he selected were making their debut in the biggest football competition in Africa.

Here are four interesting fact about Gernot Rohr as he looks to win his first trophy as Nigeria's coach.

1. After Clemens Westerhof, Rohr is the technical adviser that has posted the most wins while handling the Super Eagles

The 'Dutcherian' recorded 29 wins between 1989 and 1994 while the German coach has 19 victories under his belt in the last three years.

2. He suffered his first loss as Super Eagles’ manager in a competitive match against South Africa

The 2-0 defeat in Uyo on June 10, 2017, was Gernot Rohr's first defeat in a competitive game as Nigeria's coach.

As at the time Nigeria lost to Bafana Bafana, the Super Eagles had won their first two World Cup qualifying matches away to Zambia and at home to Algeria.

Most of the first team players were excused for the game and the second string team were given the opportunity to prove themselves but failed in front of fans at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

3. The former Bordeaux manager faced his in-laws at AFCON 2019

Gernot Rohr's wife is from the Indian Ocean island, Madagascar. The Super Eagles were defeated 2-0 by the debutants in the group stage of AFCON 2019.

Ironically, Rohr had to go to war with his wife's native country and lost in an embarrassing defeat which fans are yet to forgive the players for their woes.

4. Rohr is the first Super Eagles manager to qualify the nation to the World Cup with one game to spare, the Nations Cup with one game to spare, and the AFCON 2019 knockout stage with one game to spare in a calendar year

In the same thread of record-breaking performances, Rohr's men only lost one game in each of the qualification process to Algeria (draw canceled because of the ineligibility of a player), South Africa (at AFCON qualifiers) and Madagascar (the tournament itself).

Despite the strong criticism leveled against the German from various quarters, the Super Eagles team under Rohr, have overcome many hurdles to become one of the most feared teams in the continent.
