Super Eagles technical adviser Gernot Rohr has revealed the real reasons he has kept Henry Onyekuru and Victor Osimhen on the bench since the start of the 2019 AFCON championship.

Nigeria progress to the quarterfinals of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations tourney following their 3-2 victory over defending champions Cameroon.

Two goals from Odion Ighalo and one from Alex Iwobi helped the three time African winners beat the Indomitable Lions in their round of 16 clash over the weekend.

This now positions the China based striker for the golden boot award having scored three goals so far this season - and remain join top scorers with a a few other players.

However, some players are yet to taste action at all in a competition and the tactician says their inexperience at the championship remains the reason for their non-participation..

Onyekuru scored a total of 16 goals in all competitions for Galatasaray last season while Osimhen netted 20 goals plus four assists for RSC Charleroi.

Rohr said that: "Onyekuru and Osimhen are young and they are here to learn. Musa and Ighalo are experienced so they are the ones to start.

"For Onyekuru, he has to first fight with Simon and Chukwueze for a position and then maybe for the central position. For Osimhen, he has to be stronger. In training, any touch he falls down. So I tell him to be strong."

Meanwhile, Nigeria battle South Africa in the quarterfinal clash of the championship following their triumph over Cameroon.

Bafana Bafana also conquered host country Egypt to set up a date with the Super Eagles having both clashed at the group stage of the qualifiers.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Nigerian legend Austin Okocha has warned the Super Eagles to be wary of two South Africa stars Percy Tau and Thembinkosi Lorch.

Nigeria will take on South Africa at the Cairo International Stadium for a place in the semi finals on Wednesday, July 10.

The two nations will renew their rivalry after playing in the qualifiers where Bafana Bafana won the first leg by 2-0 and drew the second 1-1 in Johannesburg.
