- The Igbo Amaka (AM) has pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to consider the south east in the position of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF)
- The Igbo group lamented that the south east is not considered in the election of principal officers for the ninth National Assembly
- The organisation wanted leaders in the zone to support the administration of President Buhari
The Igbo Amaka (AM), on Friday, June 14, appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to consider the south east for the position of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the coordinator of the group in Ebonyi, Michael Okoro, made the appeal while speaking with journalists in Abakaliki.
According to the group, the Igbo nation has contributed so much in the development of the socio-economic and political existence of the nation.
Okoro stressed that the exclusion of the region was a gross injustice and negation of the principle of federal character.
The report added that Okoro argued that in spite of the contributions of the zone in maintaining the country’s unity, none of its kinsmen was occupying leadership position at the nation’s political, judiciary or military decision making circles.
Okoro expressed sadness over the exclusion of the south east in principal positions of the 9th National Assembly, arguing further that it would just be right to appoint any credible person of the zone as SGF.
“We believe in dialogue, peaceful negotiation; and our group is opposed to any form of aggression or confrontation as tool for achieving our objectives.
“This is why we are appealing to Mr President to appoint somebody from south east as the SGF because we believe that doing so will give the Igbo some sense of belonging,” he said adding that it is no longer a secret that Igbo have been excluded in virtually every level of leadership in the country.
He said the group was making the plea because the group understands that the appointment of the SGF is the exclusive preserve of President Buhari.
“Again this is the time to approach Buhari with humility to rebuild trust, friendship and to pledge our loyalty to his government,” Okoro said while appealing with leaders of the zone to support the president.
Legit.ng earlier reported how Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council (OYC) called on President Buhari to give the southeast the SGF.
The president general of the council, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, in a statement on Thursday, June 13, said this will enable equity, fairness in the country.
