Nigerians react as Senator Lawan emerges Senate president

Nigerians have taken to social media to share their opinion following the emergence of Senator Ahmad Lawan as Senate president.

Lawan was elected on Tuesday, June 11, to defeat his only opponent, Senator Ali Ndume, who is also a lawmaker of the All Progressives Congress.

Nigerians took to social media to congratulate the lawmaker with many hoping he will deliver dividend of democracy.

See reactions below: had reported that Lawan emerged the Senate president of the 9th National Assembly. Lawan defeated his main challenger and senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, after the counting of the ballot by the clerk of the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori.

107 senators cast their vote as Lawan polled 79 while Ndume scored 28. His victory was announced by the clerk of the National Assembly.

There was an uproar from the supporters of Lawan after the clerk announced that the secret ballot system would be adopted for the election, stating that there was a court injunction which ordered that the open ballot should be used.

The clerk in his response noted that he did not receive any injunction to the effect as he insisted that secret ballot system should be adopted as amended by the National Assembly rules of 2015.

Meanwhile, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had expressed support for Senator Ndume for the position of the president of the Senate and Umar Bago for the post of speaker of the House of Representatives. ( -> We have upgraded to serve you better.
