- A contender for the position of deputy Senate president, Ajayi Boroffice, has withdrawn from the race
- Boroffice's withdrawal is coming some hours after the working committee of the APC announced the party’s choice candidate for the position
- Danjuma Goje earlier stepped down for Ahmed Lawan in the race for the Senate president
Senator Ajayi Boroffice has withdrawn his ambition in a bid to contest for the forthcoming 9th National Assembly deputy Senate president position, saying his decision was in deference to President Muhammadu Buhari.
Premium Times reports that Boroffice's decision came after the working committee of the APC announced the party’s choice candidate for the position. The party had favoured Ovie Omo-Agege ahead of Borroffice and another major contender, Francis Alimikhena.
In a statement by Kayode Fakuyi, his press secretary, Borroffice hinged his decision to step down on respect for party and the president.
The statement read: “Some weeks ago, distinguished Senator Robert Ajayi Boroffice, OON declared intention, through letters addressed to Senators-elect, to seek the office of Deputy Senate president.
“Consequently, he embarked on extensive consultations with party leaders, senators-elect and political groups. Indeed, everybody that was consulted agreed that he is eminently qualified to seek the office of deputy Senate president.
“Instructively, majority Senators-elect have assured the senator of their support and the prospect of victory is high. However, in deference to President Buhari and APC, Senator Robert Ajayi Boroffice has decided to withdraw from the race.”
The lawmaker thanked his constituents and others for supporting his ambition.
The election for presiding officers of the ninth National Assembly will be held on Tuesday, June 11.
Legit.ng reported that Senator Danjuma Goje withdrew his ambition in a bid to contest for the forthcoming 9th National Assembly Senate president position.
Goje, however, declared his support for Senator Ahmed Lawan, the anointed APC candidate for the position.
This came few hours after the duo met with President Buhari in his office at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Lawan is the Senate leader while Goje is the chairman, committee on appropriations.
