The All Progressives Congress (APC) has formally endorsed Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and Hon Mohammed Idris Wase for the position of deputy Senate president and deputy speaker in the ninth National Assembly.
The development was made public in a statement released by the party’s national publicity secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, The Nation reports.
Legit.ng gathers that Issa-Onilu disclosed that the decision was taken after two-day emergency meetings which held between Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9.
The development also follows wide consultations with President Muhammadu Buhari and party stakeholders, including APC governors.
The statement added: “You would recall that the party had earlier announced the duo of Senator Ahmed Lawan and Hon Femi Gbajabiamila as the party’s candidates for the positions of Senate president and speaker of the House of Representatives respectively.
“All elected APC members of the Senate and House of Representatives are hereby directed to fully mobilise as a united force behind the party’s choice.
“Members who have earlier signified interests in these positions are urged to support the party’s decisions as loyal and committed members of APC by working with other members to ensure the emergence of the adopted candidates.”
The party’s spokesman added that in due course, details of other positions in the two chambers will be made public.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Northern Civil Society and Social Cultural Movement for Peace, Development and a United Nigeria said that the current zoning formula of the APC best suits Senator Ovie Omo’Agege for the deputy Senate presidency slot.
The group, with branches in all the 19 northern states and beyond, also stressed that Omo-Agege's emergence will give all regions a sense of belonging, especially the South, in the current leadership equation of the country.
