Rooney says Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo would not solve Man United problems

- Rooney wants Man United to rethink their transfer strategy this summer

- The former England international contends signing of younger players will be critical for the Red Devils

- The Manchester outfit has endured a difficult reign since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure in 2013

Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney, believes signing world class players in the stature of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi would not solve the Old Trafford outfit's problems.

United endured a difficult campaign in the 2018/19 season, failing to seal a Champions League place after finishing sixth in the league

New boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has since began plans to rebuild a new squad that can compete for titles next season.

However, Rooney contends the Red Devils will not be at a position to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

Speaking to BBC, the former United captain further explained the need for the Premier League giants to reconsider their transfer strategy this summer.

"The first thing Ole has to do is build the squad and I don't think bringing in one or two players for £100m is going to help the players already there", said the former England skipper.
"You could bring in players in Ronaldo, Messi, Ramos or Bale but it's going to cost you £350m and you'd get two years out of them and you've written that money off," he warned.

The 33-year-old also added it would take some time for United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham to reach the level of Man City and Liverpool.

Both Man City and Liverpool took the Premier League title race to the final day, with City emerging victorious with 98 points, just one ahead of Liverpool.

Earlier, had reported how Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney spoke on his former club after their unimpressive performance last season which made them not qualify for next Champions League.

The Old Trafford club ended the 2018/19 Premier League season with eight losses from their final 12 games.

Wayne Rooney is now of the opinion that players need to start fearing and respecting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching staff before the start of the new season.
