A total of 183 out of the 360 members of the incoming 9th House of Representatives reportedly backed House Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila for the position of speaker of the lower chamber.
Daily Trust reports that Abdulmumin Jibrin, the chairman of the Gbajabiamila/Wase campaign Council, who made the disclosure on Saturday, June 8, said the campaign team was confident that Gbajabiamila and Wase would emerge as speaker and deputy speaker respectively on Tuesday, June 11.
“As I speak with you, we have what it takes to win on Tuesday, June 11. I mean, we have the required numbers. More than 183 members-elect have signed for Gbajabiamila and Wase for Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively,” he said.
Jibrin said the signatories were drawn from the first time members-elect across the six geopolitical zones of the country.
Meanwhile, the speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has been urged by a coalition of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) support groups in Bauchi state to contest for a second term for the position.
Daily Trust reports that the Freedom Amalgamated Youths Organisations (FAYO) group on Saturday, June 8, at a rally in Bauchi state called on Dogara to contest for the position of speaker to consolidate on the achievements he recorded in the office in the last four years.
The chairman of the group, Suleman Shehu, said the speaker has recorded achievements, both at the national and constituency levels.
