Cristiano Ronaldo made a stunning return to the national team, scoring a hat-trick in Portugal's 3-1 win against Switzerland.

The Juventus striker has not played for the Selecao since they were ousted at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

But the 34-year-old returned with a bang, netting three goals in front of thousands of supporters at the Estadio do Dragao.

The former Real Madrid talisman opened his account with an exquisite free-kick in the 25th minute to put his side ahead.

Switzerland's pressure was finally rewarded in the 57th minute as Ricardo Rodriguez equalized to put the Swiss back in the match.

The match was heading into extra-time, but in the 88th minute, Bernardo Silva's cut-back fell nicely for Ronaldo who finished it into Yann Sommer's left-hand corner.

Ronaldo put the icing on the cake in the 90th minute in style as his tow step-overs eluded Manuel Akanji and finished with a beautiful shot in the corner as Portugal won 3-1 on the night.

The hat-trick is Ronaldo's 53rd in his career and he has now scored 157 goals in 88 matches for Portugal.

England will be taking on the Netherlands in the second semi finals and the winner will face the reliable Ronaldo and his teammates in the finals.

Meanwhile, had earlier reported that Jose Mourinho believes Cristiano Ronaldo has a "natural advantage" which makes him one of the greatest players in football history.
