Emirate councils cancel Sallah festivities in Katsina due to insecurity

Emirate councils in Katsina state have called for low-keyed Sallah celebrations due to security challenges the state is currently experiencing.

On Monday, May 27, the emir of Daura, Umar Faruk, suspended all festivities at the forthcoming Eid-el Fitr celebration over incessant bandit attacks and kidnapping happening across the state.

The emir of Daura said apart from the Eid prayer, no other durbar or festivities shall be observed at the emirate, Daily Trust reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the Katsina Emirate Council earlier suspended all festivities during Eid-el Fitr celebration in because of attacks by bandits across the state.

A resident of Batsari, Yusuf Abba, said: “People have started returning monies paid for horses booked for the events. Horse men pay as much as N20,000 to hire a horse for the durbar. People hiring out those horses come from as far as Niger Republic so, the multiplier sacrifices made are enormous.”

According to a traditional ruler, Dan Wairen Katsina II, Sada Ruma, the cancellations shows the concern the palaces have for the sanctity of human lives on the part of the emirates.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that not less than 14 people were killed in Kankara local government area of Katsina state as members of vigilante group and armed bandits clashed.

The spokesperson for the police command in the state, SP Gambo Isah, said the clash took place in Tsamiyar Jino village in Kankara local government area of the state.

SP Isah said that it all started when some vigilantes attacked bandits in their hideout, killing seven of them and in response the gang killed seven of the security men.

He said: “The vigilante members launched an attack on the bandits in the forest. They had a fierce battle and as a result of this about seven bandits were killed by the vigilante group and also about seven vigilantes also killed by the bandits.

“Bandits have taken away their corpse. The Divisional Police Officer is already there and normalcy has returned.

“The vigilante group are advised to always collaborate and synergize with security agencies whenever they have relevant information about movement of the bandits."
