- Jose Antonio Reyes' death has attracted comments from footballers and fans alike
- Santiago Canizares said the former Arsenal star should not be given a heroic goodbye
- The Spaniard was said to be speeding before crashing his car over the weekend
Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Santiago Canizares has insisted that Jose Antonio Reyes should not be 'treated like a hero'.
The former Arsenal and Atletico Madrid winger was reported dead on Saturday June 1 in a ghastly vehicle accident at the age of 35.
Canizares's comments came after the former Gunners forward died in a horrific 120mph car crash on Saturday morning outside of Seville.
Both were teammates at the Spanish national team, but the ex-shotstopper lashed out at Reyes for driving at high speeds before the deadly smash.
The former Valencia and Real Madrid goalkeeper tweeted: "Driving at high speed shows a reprehensible attitude. In the accident there have been victims in addition to the driver.
"Reyes does not deserve a tribute like a hero. But that does not remove my regret at what happened and I pray for their souls."
According to report, Reyes' 23-year-old cousin was also said to have been killed in the crash last weekend.
Meanwhile, his second cousin, Juan Manuel Calderon, survived the collision and was rushed to a hospital in Seville with serious burns. He is said to be in intensive care.
Canizares later rowed back on his original tweet by clarifying his apparently incendiary comment.
He wrote: "Maybe I didn't explain myself well. "Of course he deserves a tribute and be remembered for his career and his contribution to football.
"I read a lot of opinions and I respect them all, especially the ones where I'm insulted and despised.
"I just pretend to condemn the insensibility and ask people to think about the mistakes we make, and I believe that's perfectly compatible with the pain."
Legit.ng previously reported that Jose Antonio Reyes has died in a car crash, it has been confirmed in Spain.
The former Arsenal, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla striker passed away following the accident on that occurred on Saturday, June 1.
Former club Sevilla tweeted: "We couldn't be confirming worse news. Beloved Sevilla star José Antonio Reyes has died in a traffic collision. Rest in peace."
