- Ernesto Valverde is set to be fired by Barcelona today as Roberto Martinez tops list of possible replacement
- The Spaniard led Barca to the La Liga title this season but they suffered UCL heartbreak in the semi-final
- Martinez is among the leading managers to replace Valverde, with Thierry Henry tipped as his assistant
Ernesto Valverde is set to be sent packing by Barcelona today after two humiliating defeats during the 2018-19 campaign.
Valverde was in the dugout as Barca were bundle out of the Champions League in the semi-finals by Liverpool despite going into the reverse tie at Anfield with a three-goal lead.
Barcelona were also on the receiving end after defeat in the Copa del Rey final by Valencia at the weekend - and now the club chiefs have taken a decision concerning his future.
According to The Mirror citing Spanish outlet RAC1, Barcelona eggheads have agreed the manager will be sacked on Tuesday, May 28.
Additional reports coming out of Spain suggest Belgium manager Roberto Martinez is among top football tacticians tipped as possible replacement for the Spaniard, with Thierry Henry being promoted as his assistant.
Reacting after Barca’s Copa del Rey final defeat, Valverde dismissed claims his players are psychologically traumatized by their Champions League exit at the hands of Liverpool, with a wave of the hand.
Liverpool’s surprise 4-0 comeback in the European semi-final reverse tie is still be playing on the Barca squad's minds ahead of the Copa del Rey final with captain Lionel Messi confessing it was "tough to get back up".
That hangover continued as they were beaten 2-1 by Valencia to end the season with just the La Liga title despite, a month ago, having dreams of a treble.
Valverde stressed he was set to renew the fight next season despite doubts over his future at Camp Nou.
"We have lost, but not because of a psychological issue," he told a press conference.
"It's different from the game we played a fortnight ago, but we've lost again, that is reality, the feeling.
"We have not been able to fulfil our own expectations: we celebrated the league title, we thought we could make a triplet and we stayed on the road at the decisive moment in the Champions League and in the Copa del Rey.
"You're left with a bad feeling because we created that expectation and it has not been like that. We're here to win titles and not for anything else."
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Arsenal manager Unai Emery has been listed among potential names to replace under-fire Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde.
According to Daily Star report, Barcelona chiefs are keeping tabs on Emery, who is closing in on another Europa League title with Arsenal less than 12 months after replacing legendary boss Arsene Wenger at the end of last season’s campaign.
However, the Spaniard has started his reign brightly at the Emirates and will be closely monitored by Barca eggheads during Wednesday night's cracker between Arsenal and Chelsea in Baku, Azerbaijan.
