Arsenal’s quest for a Europa League final tribute to Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been rejected by UEFA.
According to UK Sun report, Arsenal squad members were planning to back their teammate, discussing the possibility of wearing shirts with his name during the warm-up on Wednesday, May 29.
Mkhitaryan will miss Wednesday’s final game slated for the Olympic Stadium in Baku over safety concerns.
The 30-year-old midfielder Mkhitaryan opted to remain at home, fearing he could be on the spotlight in Azerbaijan due to political impasse between his country Armenia and the host nation.
Gunners’ players were looking forward to wear shirts with his name on the back during the warm-up on Wednesday.
However, the Daily Mail claims UEFA chiefs have warned that such manifestation will not be permitted, with rules already in place to decide what the players can wear during, or after, the match.
UEFA also grant approval for celebratory T-shirts which are submitted to the governing body before the matches.
Angry Arsenal fans have launched a petition to see the Euro final moved from Baku to Wembley due to issues leading to the Armenia star's absence.
At the last count, it has attracted over 22,000 signatures, but it would be impossible to move the game with less than 72 hours to game time.
Arsenal skipper Laurent Koscielny has slammed UEFA for choosing Azerbaijan to host the Europa League final.
“I’m not very happy because we need to leave one player behind and he can’t play in the final.”
“When one country has a political problem with another then UEFA shouldn’t give the final to that country.
“We want Mkhi with us because he is an important player for Arsenal.
“But we know about the problems and if he thinks he can’t be safe it’s better for him to stay here.
“This final is very far for the fans of both teams and it’s difficult and very expensive to travel to Baku.
“We will play the game but it’s not the final we dreamed of,” Koscielny was quoted as saying to BBC.
