- Emerging reports have it that Honourable Bago is a very tough competitor against Femi Gbajabiamila for the House of Reps speaker position
- Bago reportedly has the support of 156 members-elect who are endeared by his determination and people-focus programmes
- Supporters of Bago also said the federal character also support his candidacy as he is from the north central
Just few days to the end of the eight National Assembly, the politics of who succeeds Yakubu Dogara as the speaker of the lower chamber has become more competitive.
The present competition for the House is intensely between Honourable Umaru Mohammed Bago, the lawmaker representing Chanchanga federal constituency of Niger state and the incumbent leader of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila (APC, Lagos), Guardian reports.
Reports have it that despite the fact that the APC’s zoning formula favours the leader of the house, Bago’s determination to get the seat has drawn him close to his fellow lawmakers.
It is believed among some of his colleagues that he may be the candidate to surprisingly defeat the towering influence and candidacy of Gbajabiamila.
Bago during his campaign said that he focuses more on people-related programmes that would foster enduring relationship with his stakeholders.
His supporters are saying that his candidacy is credible based on federal character, saying that the position of the speaker should be zoned to the north central since northwest already has the presidency, southwest the vice presidency and the Senate president has been zoned to the northeast.
Reportedly, there are about 156 members-elect declaring their support for Bago after the meeting he held with them in Gwarimpa, Abuja recently.
“Yes we have been meeting and we will continue to meet because ours is ideal to ensure equity and fairness among the six geopolitical zones of the country.
“We believe that Hon Bago is more than qualified to be speaker, and coming from the north central that has never occupied the position, we are sure he will be elected," director of media and publicity of Bago’s campaign, Hon Afam Ogene, said.
