Solskjaer rolled back the years with a fine opener within just four minutes of game play tapping into the empty net after plenty of ricochets in the box that came off David Beckham's cross.
Paul Scholes nearly doubled the lead in the 21st minute with a clinical finish, but the goal was ruled out for an offside.
Nevertheless, United went on to make it 2-0 nine minutes later through Dwight Yorke, sweeping an outstanding volley into the far corner after benefiting from Jesper Blomqvist's well delivered ball.
Unlike the first half, the second was full of action, with Bayern dominating the early exchanges.
However, the hosts settled in quickly, as Beckham, Nicky Buti and Scholes led the goal-hunting escapades.
Nicky went on to extend United's lead in the 79th minute, curling the ball into the bottom corner from Louis Saha's cross to put the game beyond Bayern.
Saha made it 4-0 five minutes later tapping home from Greening's slid ball.
Beckham capped his impressive performance with a stoppage time curler as the home side marched to another memorable victory.
