New radio station is not only for Fulani herdsmen - NBC

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has said that the proposed Fulani radio station is not for herdsmen alone but also targeted at fishermen, herders, hunters, farmers, and migrants.

The commission, which made the disclosure on Saturday, May 25, said the radio station is essentially for nomadic education outreach programmes, including electronically-mediated ones.

Legit.ng gathers that NBC said the National Commission for Nomadic Education applied for a broadcast license to develop and maintain nomadic education outreach programmes.

According to NBC, the station’s programmes are “purely educational".

A statement by NBC read: “Consequently, it is a misrepresentation for any person or organisation to imply that the licensed station was just for a particular group.

“The commission wishes to state that similar educational broadcast licences were issued to institutions of higher learning and other governmental institutions with comparable needs, such as the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Federal Road Safety Commission, and related institutions.

Legit.ng previously reported that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government plan of acquiring a license to set up a 'strictly Fulani radio station'.

The association said the plan was a validation of comments attributed to former president Olusegun Obasanjo about the planned Fulanisation of the country by the government.

This was contained in a statement by Pastor Bayo Oladeji, the special assistant to CAN president Samson Ayokunle.

He said: “It was reported in the newspapers that the government planned to give the Miyetti Allah N100bn. The government denied it only for the Miyetti Allah to own up, saying it was approved by former president Goodluck Jonathan. Who is fooling who?

“Why didn’t they set up a radio station for farmers too? Where is the radio station for the bandits in Zamfara, or for the Niger Delta militants? No single person has been prosecuted for the killings in the north central.

"Is the allegation by former president Olusegun Obasanjo that there is a planned Fulanisation of the country not playing out now?"
