- The Kwara South elders forum of the APC have asked President Buhari not to reappoint Lai Mohammed, the minister of information and culture
- According to the elders, they want a new nomination from their zone because the minister failed to perform to their expectation
- The forum added that whoever is chosen from Kwara South must be someone who has the interest of the state at heart
The Kwara South elders forum of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has shown opposition to the re-appointment of Lai Mohammed, the minister for information and culture.
The APC’s elders forum said they need a change for the nomination of minister from Kwara south, adding that the minister performed way below their expectation, Daily Trust reports.
The elders also added that whoever will be appointed from the zone must be someone that is well versed in local politics and has the interest Kwara people at heart.
This resolution that sought the recall of the minister was contained in a statement signed by the chairman, Chief J B Ayeni, and the secretary, Engineer Jide Usman, issued after the elders emergency meeting in Ilorin.
It was gathered that the meeting was a reaction to a press conference earlier held by the APC arm of Irepodun local government area in the state which supported the reappointment of the minister.
The forum said: “We wish to note that Kwara South is made up of seven local government areas and it is obviously larger than Irepodun LGA which constitutes less than 10% of the Senatorial district. The LGAs are Ifelodun, Oyun, Offa, Isin, Oke-ero, Ekiti and Irepodun.”
The elders forum also rejected the claim by the minister's supporters in the state that he was responsible for the party’s victory in Kwara during the 2019 general elections.
Recall that Legit.ng earlier reported that there is a titanic battle currently ongoing between Senator Gbemisola Saraki and Lai Mohammed within the Kwara state chapter of the APC.
Both political heavyweights are reportedly battling for the state's ministerial slot as President Muhammadu Buhari is set to constitute a new cabinet for his second term soon.
According to the report, both camps have started beating the war drums ahead of the impending inauguration of the new administration. While Gbemi is aiming to take her first bite of the ministerial apple, Mohammed, the current minister of information and culture, is bidding to retain his position.
