PDP asks Bulkachuwa to withdraw from presidential election tribunal

- Justice Bulkachuwa has been asked by the PDP to withdraw from presidential election petitions tribunal

- The party in its application said it would be impossible for Bulkachuwa to be objective given the position of her husband as an elected senator of the APC

- The justice, however, said she hoped that the party will formalise its request

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked the president of Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, who is also a member of the presidential election petitions tribunal, to withdraw from the tribunal.

PDP said it would not allow some individuals in the country to hijack the collective will of majority of Nigerians, adding that Nigerians are tired of the All Progressives congress (APC) and President Buhari.

Premium Times reports that the opposition party claimed that Justice Bulkachuwa's husband is a senator-elect under APC, therefore, she should excuse herself from the presidential tribunal.

The PDP in its application, said it would be impossible for Bulkachuwa to be objective given the position of her husband as an elected senator of the APC.

After re-emerging from the closed-door session on Wednesday, May 15, Bulkachuwa announced that the PDP had made the application requesting that she recuse herself.

She said although a verbal application was made, the party hoped to formalise its request on Thursday, May 16. She, however, asked the respondents if they had a reaction to the application already noted.

In response, a lead counsel for the respondents, Wole Olanikpekun, and the other respondents said they would also like to make a formal response to the application.

The court then adjourned till May 22 for the hearing of the request from the PDP. The PDP and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar, are seeking the nullification of Buhari’s election. The party said it won the February 23 presidential election.

Recall that Legit.ng reported that some staff of the PDP asked Justice Bulkachuwa to excuse herself from the tribunal.

The PDP staff who protested at the party’s national secretariat, Wadata House, Abuja on Monday, May 13, passed a vote of no confidence on the tribunal as long as Justice Bulkachuwa remained a member.

The protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as: “Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa: You cannot preside over your own case, your husband is a senator elect under APC”, “Justice is not for the most powerful, it must be seen to be right and done” and “On moral grounds, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa excuse yourself from presidential tribunal”.
