- Sergio Aguero has reportedly claimed a Champions League finalist deserves to win the 2019 Ballon d'Or

- The Argentine believes Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo could be out of the race

- Liverpool and their Premier League rivals Tottenham will meet in the Champions League final

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has reportedly claimed that the 2019 Ballon d'Or award should go to a Champions League finalist.

This means the award should not be given to Portugal international Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentine football star Lionel Messi because their clubs are not in the Champions League final.

Lionel Messi and his Barcelona teammates were sent out of the 2018/19 Champions League by Premier League side Liverpool while Juventus were beaten by Ajax.

But Messi and Ronaldo remain the favorites for the honor as always, Sergio Aguero has called for the award to be presented to a player featuring in this season's UEFA Champions League final.

The 2018/19 Champions League final will be played between Liverpool and Tottenham in Madrid on June 1.

"I think someone who is in the Champions League final should win it,'' Sergio Aguero explained according to Sportskeeda.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have both won the Ballon d'Or award five times before before they were beaten in the last ceremony by Real Madrid star Luka Modric.

Luka Modric steered his country as captain to the final of the 2018 World Cup in Russia before losing against France.

In another development, Sergio Aguero made some clarification on social media.

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how former Juventus star Medhi Benatia believes Cristiano Ronaldo has done well to win this year's Ballon d'Or award ahead of his arch rival Lionel Messi.

Both stars who have won the prize five times each will not be in the final of the UEFA Champions League next month, following their failures to help their sides progress to the last stage.
