Some officials of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) in Ebonyi state on Tuesday, May 14, allegedly killed a lawyer, Geoffrey Mgbada, along Ezza road, Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital.
It was gathered that Mgbada, a member of the Abakaliki Capital Territory Development Board (ACTDA), was in the company of his wife when his vehicle was stopped by officials of the VIO who pushed him and he fell down.
It was gathered that the late lawyer hit his head on a concrete block and lost consciousness before he was rushed to the hospital by the officials where doctors confirmed him death.
The Nigerian Tribune reports that residents of Ebonyi state have called for the ban of VIO officials in the state.
Also speak on the death of his father, Chijoke Mgbada, called on the state government to intervene and ensure that the killers of his father are charged for murder and punished according to law.
Chijoke said he was preparing for school when the incident occurred.
He said: “I was preparing to go to school (Ebonyi State University) when my mother came in shouting, she was telling me that I should start going to teaching hospital; that my father fainted when he was beaten to coma by the VIO officers."
“When I got there, it was a different thing. To the contrary, my father was dead already. You can see it that I am not with myself now. The government should ban VIOs and the person that did this should be sentenced to life imprisonment.
“My father is an elder in this state and he is well known, even his Excellency knows him. He is a member of the Abakaliki Capital Territory Development Board (ACTDA) and he is also the secretary of the Elders Council," Chijoke said.
In his reaction, the state governor, David Umahi, has ordered an investigation into the alleged killing of the lawyer.
A statement signed by the governor's chief press secretary, Emmanuel Uzor described the death of Mgbada as callous.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Federal Capital Territory police command said it has taken into custody two of its officers who allegedly killed an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Nyanya, Abuja.
Late Ogar Jombo, an Assistant Superintendent of the NSCDC, was allegedly killed on Wednesday, March 20 in the presence of his wife and children, when he was stopped by the policemen for alleged violation of traffic rules.
The commissioner of police in the FCT, Mr Bala Ciroma, said that investigation was ongoing to unravel the cause of the incident.
